Shelduck & Alba

Early morning rain had lifted as we made progress along farborough bank with 4 male & 4 female Goosander and the male Smew half way along but despite prolonged searching we failed to see the Long-tailed Duck out in the centre till our return. The Great Northern Diver was off the spit and 2 Water Rail performed well in toft shallows. Only other bird of note was 2 Shelduck out in the centre but our return to the car park was disappointing as the fishing boats had flushed all the species away from farborough bank.

Also present were 17 Goldeneye, 4 Wigeon, 200 Fieldfare and 200 Redwing in the field adjacent the entrance, 24 Greater-Black-backed Gulls, 9 Snipe on the scrape and an increase in Meadow Pipits with 40+ seen. The albino Grey Squirrel is still around in toft shallows.

Tried our luck on Napton on the Hill but it was very blustery and only found a single Goldcrest while on the way home good numbers of winter thrushes were between Napton and Tomlow.
